About Us Our story begins with a dream, generations in the making – a dream that, over time, became reality through one simple but powerful act: a hand, holding a tender sapling, finding its way into a single hole in the ground. The rest is history – and a hopeful future, still being written.
At the close of the 19th century, when a scattered people longed to return home, Theodor Herzl envisioned a Jewish state on the land of his ancestors. When KKL-JNF was founded in 1901, its core mission was to turn that dream into something tangible – acre by acre, tree by tree, forest by forest.
And that dream soon grew into something far greater than words or hopes alone. Jewish communities from every corner of the world contributed, penny by penny, to purchase roughly 640,000 acres and bring new life to land that had long been neglected. Every planting was a real, human moment – hands pressing into damp soil, full of hope. And when millions of these moments came together, one after another, an entire land began to turn green again.
Those moments are still happening today – every time someone visits a planting center and touches the earth with their own hands, or takes part in an online Zoom ceremony they helped bring to life.
Mandated by the government, KKL-JNF serves as Israel’s National Forest Service and Land Development Authority, caring for roughly 74,000 acres of forests, woodlands, and open spaces – so that every one of us has the chance to show up, plant, and feel, even for a moment, part of something larger than ourselves.
And the truth is, this experience doesn’t stay within Israel’s borders. Today, KKL-JNF operates in more than 55 countries around the world, inviting anyone, anywhere, at any time, to take part in this powerful, one-of-a-kind act rooted in Israel – planting a sapling in its soil, whether you plant it yourself, or join in real time as someone plants it on your behalf.
Because in the end, the biggest stories are made of the smallest, most intimate moments. It’s the moment that begins the instant you order your sapling. It continues at the planting center, where your hands touch the soil as you plant a tree in your name, or in honor of someone you love. And it lives on in the tree itself – part of the landscape, part of the story, part of a living legacy that keeps growing here for many years to come.
